My one piece hot take is that Yamato was never gonna join the crew, if you go back and read the story its clear he was being set up as Wano’s guardian. The whole theme of Oden’s flashback was about whether he made the right choice by leaving. Story telling wise it makes sense for Yamato to make the opposite choice he did. Plus he spent the whole arc bonding with Momonosuke rather than the Straw Hats, which i don’t think Oda would have done if he ever intended him to join
